Bach\u00a0<\/strong>and an orchestration class under\u00a0<strong><em>Marius Constant<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong><strong>at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Musique in Paris)<\/strong>\u00a0and Saturday night dances (rock, pop), he embarked on a variety of musical adventures with such notable musicians as : Antoine Herv\u00e9,\u00a0<strong>Michel Portal<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Fran\u00e7ois Jeanneau<\/strong>, Woody Shaw,\u00a0<strong>Trilok Gurtu<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An educator<\/strong>\u00a0by taste, keen to follow the age-old tradition of passing on musical desire and pleasure over generations, and a composer (<strong>ONJ 86<\/strong>, La Bande \u00e0 Badault, WDR Big Band\u2026), he is equally successful working with small and large ensembles.<\/p>\n<p>He created his own personal laboratory, the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0in 1989 with 8 of the 1980s generation\u2019s \u201cmost flamboyant improvisers\u201d, and was awarded the\u00a0<strong><em>1992 Django d\u2019Or for best French jazz band of the year<\/em><\/strong>. This band left a huge mark on the early 1990s music scene.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1994 and 1999, he was appointed co-director of the Sc\u00e8ne Marnaise de Cr\u00e9ation Musicale, and took part in the collective adventure of POM, a big band of ever-shifting line-up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2000<\/strong>, he formed a new incarnation of the<strong>\u00a0MegaOctet<\/strong>, was artist-in-residence until June 2003 at the Espace Daniel-Sorano in Vincennes with the\u00a0<strong>Compagnie aime l\u2019air<\/strong>, which he formed with Thierry Virolle. He created \u201c<strong>Pop Unit 2000<\/strong>\u201c with the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>, two dancers and video projections.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel he performed in a duo with Philippe Sellam, in a trio with Denis Badault and Emmanuel Bex, and another with Claude Tchamitchian and Eric Echampard. He regularly works with Ars Nova and Pascal Contet on contemporary music projects and, of course, with the MegaOctet.<\/p>\n<p>He also became in great demand as composer for many commissions for professional ensembles of all sizes as well as ensembles bringing together professional and amateur musicians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2003<\/strong>\u00a0saw the release of \u201c<strong>Tee time<\/strong>\u201c by the\u00a0<strong>Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard trio<\/strong>\u00a0(which caught the press\u2019s attention\u00a0: \u201cEmoi\u201c in Jazz Magazine, **** in Jazzman\u2026), and \u201c<strong>Bouts de souffles<\/strong>\u201c, a duo with Pascal Contet.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Emler and the Compagnie aime l\u2019air were in an residency at\u00a0<strong>L\u2019apostrophe<\/strong>, Sc\u00e8ne nationale de Cergy-Pontoise et du Val d\u2019Oise, from\u00a0<strong>September 2004<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>June 2007<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Premiere<\/strong>\u00a0for the MegaOctet with Michel Portal in November 2005 at Jazz au fil de l\u2019Oise.<\/p>\n<p>Concerts by the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard<\/strong>\u00a0trio in France, Switzerland and the Baltic countries among others\u2026 He is also increasingly in demand for solo performances.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>October 2004<\/strong>, release of \u201c<strong>Dreams in tune<\/strong>\u201c, the new CD by the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>, to unanimous critical acclaim, and a nomination at the\u00a0<strong><em>Victoires du Jazz 2005 for French jazz album of the year<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>March 2006 saw the release of \u201c<strong>A quelle distance sommes-nous\u00a0?<\/strong>\u201c, the second CD by the\u00a0<strong>Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard<\/strong>\u00a0trio. Press was again excellent : \u201c\u0192\u0192\u0192\u0192\u201c T\u00e9l\u00e9rama, \u201cEmoi\u201c Jazz Magazine etc.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Emler is awarded the\u00a0<strong><em>Django d\u2019or \u201cSacem\u201c de la cr\u00e9ation 2006<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>March 2007<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0saw the release of\u00a0<strong>\u201cWest in peace\u201c,<\/strong>\u00a0the new\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0album. Again it was ecstatically received by the press and profession alike\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cBest French album 2007\u201c of the Acad\u00e9mie du Jazz<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cEmoi Jazz Magazine for 2007\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cChoc Jazzman for 2007\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>April 2007<\/strong>\u00a0saw the premiere of\u00a0<strong>\u201cChildhood journeys\u201c,<\/strong>\u00a0composed by A.E for the MegaOctet together with\u00a0<strong>Les Percussions de Strasbourg<\/strong>. Recorded by France Musique and broadcast in the l\u2019UER europ\u00e9en. Commande d\u2019Etat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 2008<\/strong>\u00a0saw the appearance of a\u00a0<strong>DVD filmed in concert\u00a0<\/strong>at the New Morning, Paris, in September 2006 with the\u00a0<strong>E,T,E trio, the MegaOctet\u00a0<\/strong>with special guest<strong>\u00a0Marc Ducret<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On May 16th, 2008<\/strong>, Andy Emler celebrated his 50th birthday at\u00a0<strong>La Coupole<\/strong>, sc\u00e8ne nationale de Combs-la-Ville, with a repeat performance of\u00a0<strong>\u201cChildhood journeys\u201c<\/strong>, with the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0and Les\u00a0<strong>Percussions de Strasbourg<\/strong>, plus\u00a0<strong>Elise Caron<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Michel Portal<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andy Emler<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0were :<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Victoire du Jazz 2008<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>in the\u00a0<strong>\u201cFrench artist or instrumental ensemble of the year\u201c\u00a0<\/strong>category<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Django d\u2019Or 2008<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>\u201clive performance Spedidam\u201c\u00a0<\/strong>category<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2008<\/strong>\u00a0saw the release of\u00a0<strong>\u201cFor better times\u201c<\/strong>, a solo album for multiple pianos. An achievement praised by the press for its depth and musical uniqueness.<\/p>\n<p>The year\u00a0<strong>2009<\/strong>\u00a0marked the celebration of the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u2019s 20th birthday.\u00a0<strong>On June 30th, 2009<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>\u201cChildhood journeys\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>les Percussions de Strasbourg<\/strong>\u00a0was performed at the prestigious<strong>\u00a0Salle Pleyel in Paris<\/strong>, with another performance five days earlier in\u00a0<strong>Besan\u00e7on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>April 2009<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard<\/strong>\u00a0trio embarked on a second tour in the Baltic countries, and the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0was warmly received in\u00a0<strong>Norway, Estonia and Finland<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 June 23rd, 2009\u00a0<\/strong>saw the release on the Na\u00efve label of<strong>\u00a0\u201cCrouch, touch, engage\u201c<\/strong>, the new<strong>\u00a0MegaOctet\u00a0<\/strong>album, including a DVD of a performance filmed in September 2008 at Le Triton in Les Lilas. It was awarded both the\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cEmoi\u201cJazz Magazine<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cChoc\u201c Jazzman\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Praise<\/strong>\u00a0in the Press was unanimous in\u00a0<strong>Le Monde, Les Echos, Lib\u00e9ration.fr, the S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung, the Helsingin Sanomat, Les Inrockuptibles<\/strong>\u2026 The MegaOctet tours in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium and the UK.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Andy Emler<\/strong>\u00a0was composer in residence in the Pays-de-Loire in 2009, and at the\u00a0<strong>Fondation Royaumont 2009\/2011<\/strong>\u00a0with numerous projects including the\u00a0<strong>premiere of \u201cDionysos \u00e0 Royaumont\u201c\u00a0<\/strong>on October 10th, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2009,\u00a0<strong>\u201cCrouch, touch, engage\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded an\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cChoc Jazz Magazine\/Jazzman for 2009\u201c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>It also featured in the shortlist for\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cDisques de jazz de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2009\u201c<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in both daily papers\u00a0<strong><em>Le Monde<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>and\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In early 2010<\/strong>\u00a0he was awarded the\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cChoc des lecteurs 2009\u201c<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by readers of Jazz Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>As part of his\u00a0<strong>residency at Royaumont<\/strong>, he composed and conducted the premiere of\u00a0<strong>\u201cDu Slam \u00e0 l\u2019Atlas\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0for 5 soloists from the MegaOctet and 5 Moroccan musicians\/singers, which was subsequently performed in Morocco in 2010 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andy Emler<\/strong>\u00a0received, on July 13th, 2010, the\u00a0<strong><em>Victoire du Jazz 2010<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u201cinstrumental album of the year\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0award for \u201cCrouch, touch, engage\u201c\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in late 2009, Andy Emler has given\u00a0<strong>performances on pipe\/church organ<\/strong>, playing both original compositions and improvisations, which in\u00a0<strong>July 2010<\/strong>\u00a0led to an appearance at the\u00a0<strong>Festival d\u2019Aix-en-Provence<\/strong>, at Saint-Sauveur cathedral with \u00a0<strong>Guillaume Orti<\/strong>\u00a0(saxophone) and kora player\u00a0<strong>Ballak\u00e9 Sissoko\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On November 27th, 2010, a\u00a0<strong><em>Django d\u2019Or 2010<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u201cconfirmed musician\u201c\u00a0<\/strong>(\u00a0!) for<strong>\u00a0Andy Emler MegaOctet\/\u201cCrouch, touch, engage\u201c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2011<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>le MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0toured in France and abroad, the<strong>\u00a0trio Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard<\/strong>\u00a0trio discovered the UK, and<strong>\u00a0pipe organ \u201cclassical\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0performances with\u00a0<strong>Laurent Dehors<\/strong>\u00a0on clarinet conquered new musical territories and new audiences\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>In May<\/strong>\u00a0Andy Emler releases\u00a0<strong>\u201cPause\u201c<\/strong>, an album performed on the Cavaill\u00e9-Coll organ of the Fondation Royaumont with members of the MegaOctet.\u00a0<strong><em>Choc Jazz Magazine\/Jazzman<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On November 3rd-5th, 2011<\/strong>, the new\u00a0<strong>Andy Emler MegaOctet\u00a0<\/strong>repertoire is unveiled at<strong>\u00a0Le Triton \u2013 Les Lilas<\/strong>, followed by a concert at the Tampere Jazz Happening (Finland) and\u00a0<strong>a studio recording\u00a0<\/strong>of the new music at the\u00a0<strong>studio La Buissonne<\/strong>\u00a0for the next MegaOctet CD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 2012<\/strong>\u00a0sees the release of\u00a0<strong>\u201cE total\u201c<\/strong>, a new double CD by the\u00a0<strong>Andy Emler MegaOctet<\/strong>, to critical acclaim\u00a0: Jazz Magazine, le Monde, Citizen Jazz, etc. The package includes a film by Richard Bois. Jazz Magazine features the band on its cover, with a\u00a0<strong>14-page article on Andy Emler\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In October, the documentary\u00a0<strong>\u201cZicocratie\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Richard Bois,<\/strong>\u00a0filmed during the preparation and recording of \u201cE total\u201c is being edited. It has since been distributed by FNAC.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Jazzdor Festival<\/strong>\u00a0in Strasbourg invites Andy Emler, on November 9th, 2012, for a repeat performance of his work\u00a0<strong>\u201cChildhood journeys\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0written for the\u00a0<strong>MegaOctet<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Les Percussions de Strasbourg<\/strong>, as part of the celebrations marking the 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the PDS.<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion,\u00a0<strong>\u201cObsisens\u201c,<\/strong>\u00a0a work by Andy Emler for the ensemble\u2019s 6 percussionists, is premiered. The concert is filmed by a television crew and is later broadcast on cable TV (Mezzo) and the Internet (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.szenic.eu\/\">www.szenic.eu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 March 2013<\/strong>\u00a0marks the premiere of the show\u00a0<strong>\u201cRavel\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0on a text by\u00a0<strong>Jean Echenoz<\/strong>, directed by\u00a0<strong>Anne-Marie Lazarini<\/strong>, for which Andy Emler writes the music, which he performs live, and was awarded the\u00a0<strong>Prix du meilleur compositeur de musique de sc\u00e8ne 2013<\/strong>\u00a0by the syndicat de la critique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2014<\/strong>\u00a0saw the release of the 3rd CD by the\u00a0<strong>Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard<\/strong>\u00a0trio, \u201cSad and beautiful\u201c, to critical acclaim \u2013\u00a0<strong><em>Choc Jazz Magazine\/Jazzman<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0Concerts in France and Norway.
