A MegaOctet concert is a special sensory experience. What carries us away and fascinates us comes from a unique collective energy; a set of individual forces skilfully combined to create a trance, an instantly recognisable fusion. We’re given the chance to taste this production in a perfectly regulated ceremony.
The MegaOctet has its own recipes, its own unavoidable passages. Like a rock combo that returns ever more intensely to the depths of its singing, over the years the orchestra has forged its own way of vibrating in unison. An extravagant, jubilant, sometimes funny, always very powerful, spellbinding unison.
Over the last twenty years, the MegaOctet has grown to include : Laurent Blondiau (trumpet), Philippe Sellam and Guillaume Orti (alto sax), Laurent Dehors (tenor sax, clarinets), François Thuillier (tuba), Eric Echampard (drums), François Verly (percussion) and Claude Tchamitchian (double bass). Today, they are the guardians of a flame that has stood the test of time and marked its era.
If all these loudmouths, these dazzling personalities, have been so loyal, it’s because of the ecstatic moment they experience and give us to experience during a concert.
The work of Andy Emler with his MegaOctet is there: at the moment of the concert, without distance, without artifice, he has the gift of sharing. And this moment, so meticulously prepared, is conducive to all the most fruitful discoveries and new joys.
Just a beginning is the first disc recording of a MegaOctet concert. While nothing can ever replace the experience of direct contact with this extraordinary band, we felt that this recording was, at last, a satisfactory translation of the Mega universe on stage. Produced under the auspices of the D’Jazz Nevers festival, it also gives us a chance to hear the acrobatic improvisers Médéric Collignon, Thomas de Pourquery and Nguyên Lê, all three of whom have returned to the fold for this original programme.
Just a beginning: as the name suggests. A fresh orchestra, forever (re)beginning.
